Texas Rangers Sign Ace Pitcher Brody Bumila in 2026 MLB Draft

The Texas Rangers have signed ace pitcher Brody Bumila, the 2025-26 MaxPreps Male National Athlete of the Year and 2025-26 Gatorade Massachusetts Baseball Player of the Year, in the 2026 MLB Draft. Bumila, a 6-foot-9 southpaw, was selected 89th overall by the Rangers at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Saturday, July 11.

What happened?

Bumila, a Raynham resident and former Bishop Feehan ace, went 5-0, giving up nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits and 14 walks while striking out 96 in 44⅓ innings of work. He led the Shamrocks to an appearance in the MIAA Division 1 final. However, Bumila's draft prospects were uncertain due to a recent injury to his UCL in his left throwing arm.

Why it matters for Texas Rangers

The Rangers' farm system was ranked 27th overall by Baseball America in its midseason rankings on Tuesday, July 7. Despite this, the team's scouting department saw enough potential in Bumila to take a chance on him. Bumila will undergo Tommy John surgery in Arlington, TX in the coming week after signing with the Rangers for an undisclosed amount.

What comes next?

Bumila will work with the Rangers to prepare for his return to the mound and a chance at his lifelong dream of pitching in the majors. The 18-year-old's clear talent and potential convinced the Rangers to take a chance on him. Bumila is the fourth Massachusetts athlete to be selected in the opening three rounds of major North American sports league's draft this summer.

The Rangers' minor league affiliates, from lowest to highest, are the ACL Rangers (Rookie), Hickory Crawdads (A), Hub City Spartanburgers (Advanced A), Frisco RoughRiders (AA) and Round Rock Express (AAA). Bumila had committed to the University of Texas in 2024, but will now forgo college having signed with the Rangers. There still will be a left-handed pitcher from the Greater Taunton area next year in Austin, however, with former Taunton High softball standout and 2023-24 Gatorade Massachusetts Softball Player of the Year Sam Lincoln transferring to Texas softball from Texas Tech.

The Texas Rangers are currently standing 3rd in the American League with a 49-47 record, on a winning streak. They last won 6-5 against the Houston Astros on July 12.
